Education Welfare Team

The Education Welfare Team (EWT) is part of Inclusion & Early Intervention within the Department for Children, Young People, Education and Skills.

If your child/ren’s attendance or punctuality is a cause for concern, and despite support from your school, attendance does not improve, the school will initiate a Request for Involvement (RFI) of an Education Welfare Officer (EWO).  EWOs provide support for children and young people (3-19 years) and their families to ensure good school attendance.

Each school has an allocated EWO based at the Department for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, with the exception of the States four 11 – 16 secondary schools who have school based EWOs.

EWOs will gather information about your child/ren in a number of ways. We will encourage you to be involved in this process and aim to keep you informed of our involvement. This may include:

  • Consulting with school to gain background information
  • Discussing your child/ren with other professionals if appropriate
  • Carrying out assessments
  • Talking with your child/ren about their strengths and difficulties
  • Creating an Attendance and/or Punctuality Plan to identify a way forward

It is the EWOs’ philosophy to support children, young people and their families so it is important that we work together to find solutions to improve your child/ren’s educational experience. However, should the EWO consider that, as a parent/carer, you are unwilling or unable to ensure your child/ren attend school regularly without good reason, a referral will be made to the Education Welfare Team Manager. Following this referral, a more formal process will be initiated.
