To provide housing and offer support to lone pregnant women and mothers with young children. To help mothers move forward to a positive future.
1. Causeway Association aims to provide advice, sheltered accommodation and any help required to women who have unplanned pregnancies.
Single mothers with young children, up to the age of 5 years, can also be accommodated. Exceptions are possible under extreme circumstances subject to approval by the Management Committee.
Anyone considering moving into Causeway must be referred to the Manager by an appropriate local agency such as a Doctor, Health Visitor, Children's Service, Women's Refuge etc.
2. Causeway House is situated at 30 Belmont Road and is a hostel for mothers and babies. Mothers can be accommodated for a maximum of 18 months. There is a Caretaker on the premises.
What accommodation is available
6. Causeway House has eight units of accommodation, some are single rooms and some are two roomed units.
Are residential qualifications necessary
7. Residential qualifications are not necessary, however, if a person has very recently arrived in Jersey, then it might not be appropriate unless she is able to support herself financially.
At which stage of pregnancy can a woman move into Causeway
8. Provided there is space at the House then it is possible for women who have confirmed they are pregnant to move there. Causeway cannot accept people who were already pregnant when they arrived in Jersey to live.
How long can a person stay
9. Initially, a contract for a six month stay is arranged. It is possible to extend this period up to a maximum of 18 months.
How much notice is required to leave
10. A person is expected to give one weeks notice.
What are the charges
11. The charge is £90 per week for a single room, £100 for a two-roomed unit. This charge covers the use of facilities including washing machine, but does not include food [ 2009 figures]
Rules for Residents of the Causeway House
12. This is a copy of the house rules (as at March 2009)
Residents are accommodated on condition that the following rules are kept:
1 No male visitors at any time. Anyone breaking this rule will immediately be given notice to leave.
2 Female visitors are not allowed between the hours of 8pm and 10am unless arrangement has previously been made with the Manager or Caretaker.
3 Doctors, Health Visitors, workmen etc will be allowed access by arrangement with the Manager or Caretaker.
4 Residents in possession of, or under the influence of, illegal substances will be immediately evicted.
5 Residents must pay the weekly rent every Monday.
6 Payments must be made regularly to the Manageror Caretaker.
7 Failure to pay will be notified to the Management Committee and may result in notice to leave.
8 A deposit of one week's rent shall be paid. This deposit will be returned at the end of the period of residence on condition that: the room(s) and contents are left in the same condition as found. Otherwise costs of cleaning and replacement will be deducted. The deposit will not be refunded until all personal possessions have been removed from the house.
9 Rents will be reviewed annually in January.
SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE OF THE HOSTELS
10 The front door is to be kept locked at all times.
11 Residents must take part in fire drills organised by the Manager or Caretaker.
12 Residents must keep their own rooms clean, and take care of the furniture and decorations. They must maintain communal areas in a clean and tidy state.
13 Residents must not cook, burn candles, use kettles, toasters, Irons or similar equipment in their rooms.
14 Residents must not dispose of nappies or any solid objects down the toilets.
15 Residents must ensure that lights, heaters, cooking equipment and other appliances are always switched off when not being used.
16 No animals or other pets are allowed.
17 Residents shall not smoke in any area of the house. Smoking is allowed in the back yard, providing this does not annoy other residents.
18 Residents are not allowed to purchase duplicate or replacement keys for any lock, either to an individual room or the outer doors of the premises. Lost keys will be replaced and charged for.
CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS
19 Residents shall not enter another person's room without that person's clear permission.
20 Residents shall not bring any illegal substance, or alcohol, into the premises, and shall not knowingly allow any other person to enter the premises with such substances.
21 Residents shall not permit, cause or allow the premises to be used for any unlawful or immoral purpose; nor shall they cause, suffer, or permit any act to be done which could constitute a nuisance to staff, other residents, or neighbouring owners or occupiers or their property.
22 Residents must reside in the house at night or discuss with the Manager in advance where they are spending the night. This is especially important where the whereabouts of a child is concerned.
23 Residents shall not use the address of the premises for catalogue orders, hire purchase or similar agreements, in order to avoid the possibility that any resident is put under pressure.
24 Prams, pushchairs, buggies etc must not be allowed to cause an obstruction to any entry or exit to the premises or the hallway. They must be folded.
25 No item of equipment belonging to the Causeway Association shall be removed from the premises.
26 Residents shall not bring onto the premises any heavy or large items of equipment either for storage, or use in the communal areas, or in their individual rooms.
27 Residents shall attend reviews with the Manager.
28 Residents must observe any other written or verbal conditions which may be given from time to time by the Management Committee, the Manager or the Caretaker.
29 At the end of their period of residence, residents must leave a follow-on address for emergencies and postal purposes.
30 Residents are informed that the Causeway Association works with the Children’s Service.
31 The Manager or Caretaker is allowed to enter the residents' rooms in an emergency, or when a spot-check is judged necessary.
If you do not fully understand any of these rules, or their terms or scope, it is your responsibility to ask for explanation from the Manager.
Breach of any of these rules is likely to result in the Causeway Association requiring you to leave the premises.
